History

The name „Grüner Veltliner“

The name of Grüner Veltliner is not so old, because earlier the varietal was called “Weißgipfler” or “Grünmuskateller”.

The “Roter Veltliner” has existed for many centuries. A mutant of this varietal is the “Brauner Veltliner”, which is made from brown-grey grapes. “Brauner Veltliner” and “Weißgipfler” were very often mixed up, because they look almost similar. So the designation was coordinated with the colour of the grapes. That`s why the varietal is called “Grüner Veltliner”.

Ampelography

The maternal side of Grüner Veltliner originates from the varietal called “Traminer”. GV has no genetic relationship with “Muskateller”. The paternal side had been unknown for years, but Dr. Ferdinand Regner found it. It descends from a very old vine, which stands in the “Leithagebirge” in Burgenland. There is only one vine of this varietal, which has poor conditions.

Growth

Grüner Veltliner has existed for more than 200 years. Mostly this varietal had a poor reputation. It was only a mass wine, because it was good for producing huge quantities. In recent decades this wine has developed into a good-quality varietal.
